Worldwide, 696 million people lack access to basic drinking water, and one in four people lacks access to basic sanitation. The consequences are devastating: Diarrheal diseases caused by contaminated drinking water, a lack of latrines, and poor hygiene are among the leading causes of death among children under five: Every day, an average of 700 children worldwide die as a result of contaminated water.
In rural areas of many African countries, it is primarily women and children who walk long distances every day to fetch water. This water is usually not clean; instead, it comes from sources that people have to share with animals. This is not only a health hazard but also an enormous drain on energy and time—time that cannot be spent on school, for example.
Through the 100% WASH project, well:fair builds wells and sanitation facilities for schools and communities—currently in Ethiopia, Kenya, and Tanzania—thereby enabling the Access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene – in short: WASH. That's how the The foundation for health, educational opportunities, self-determination, and future prospects created.
