Every three minutes, a child is born with a cleft lip and palate somewhere in the world. This is a birth defect that can have serious consequences if left untreated. Surgery can change these children’s lives for the better—forever.
Cleft lip and palate is one of the most common congenital malformations. One in 500 newborns is affected by it, including in Germany. While children here are supported by the healthcare system, this is not the case in many countries. Children from low-income families in particular often lack guaranteed access to qualified treatment in developing and emerging economies.

The German Cleft Children's Aid organization is committed to helping them and funds the necessary Surgeries and follow-up treatments. Without treatment, the life of a child with a cleft malformation is severely impaired. Because of their appearance, “children with clefts” are marginalized and live with their families on the margins of society. Depending on the type and extent of the malformation, they also face serious functional limitations. The children may unable to swallow, eat, drink, or speak properly. Babies with cleft palates are often malnourished and undernourished, making them susceptible to infections. In the worst-case scenario, this can be life-threatening.
The surgery, which usually takes no longer than an hour and costs an average of just 300 euros in the countries where Deutsche Cleft Kinderhilfe operates, gives children hope for the future and sometimes even saves lives.
