The organization CARE Germany was founded in Bonn in 1980. CARE Germany is one of 16 member organizations of CARE International.
CARE was founded in 1945 in the United States as the “Cooperative for American Remittances to Europe” (C.A.R.E.). The organization sent 100 million aid packages—which later became the world-famous CARE packages—to war-torn postwar Europe. These packages alleviated hunger, provided comfort, and helped people rebuild their lives. From its beginnings as a private aid organization for Europe, CARE grew to become one of the world's largest independent aid organizations.
CARE is worldwide in use to To save lives, end poverty, and achieve social justice. This work has most recently reached more than 58 million people worldwide—57 percent of whom were women and girls. In total, CARE employs approximately 11,200 staff members, 97 percent of whom work in their home countries.
CARE provides impartial humanitarian aid in places where there is acute need, and places the needs of women and girls at the center of its work—through targeted aid measures and by promoting their participation. Because one thing is clear: Poverty cannot be overcome until all people have equal rights and opportunities.
One of the aid organization's main focuses is the Commitment to Climate Protection and Support Programs, which help local communities adapt to climate change—especially in places where the climate crisis is already a reality, even though those affected have contributed the least to it and are barely able to protect themselves on their own.
In addition, CARE is active in Germany in the school-based educational work It is active and, among other things, is implementing the KIWI ("Critical, Inclusive, Appreciative, Proactive") project—a project focused on intercultural learning in elementary and secondary schools.
CARE projects are developed in consultation with local communities and based on international quality standards. CARE has consultative status with the United Nations and supports those whose voices are often not heard: local partners and those directly affected by crises and disasters.
In 2024, CARE Deutschland e.V. allocated 97.4 million EUR to direct project funding and support—approximately 84% of its revenue (Source: Audit Report 2024).
