How Your Donation Makes a Difference

In Doctors Without Borders’ projects, more than 67,000 staff members provide life-saving assistance to millions of patients. Nine out of ten of these staff members are from the countries where the organization operates; they live locally and usually work for the organization on a long-term basis—and thus provide the vast majority of the aid. Doctors Without Borders employs doctors, nurses, midwives, and logistics specialists, among others. Their activities are diverse: they perform surgeries on the injured and run clinics, set up nutrition centers for malnourished children, and participate in vaccination campaigns. They provide refugees with medication, clean drinking water, latrines, and blankets. In addition, they often offer psychosocial support.

Doctors Without Borders provides rapid, professional assistance to people in need, regardless of their origin, religion, or political beliefs. This principle has remained unchanged since young French doctors and journalists founded the organization in 1971 under the name Doctors Without Borders founded.

One example of the emergency aid provided by Ärzte ohne Grenzen e.V. is the Emergency deployment in the Gaza Strip. During the devastating war, the teams provided surgical care, psychological support, and physical therapy; they assisted with childbirth, ran emergency rooms, and ensured access to drinking water. Even after the ceasefire, Doctors Without Borders remains active on the ground, as the humanitarian needs are enormous. Much of the country lies in ruins; hospitals and doctors’ offices have been destroyed, and thousands of people are seriously injured and traumatized. Since the war began in October 2023, Doctors Without Borders has, among other things, performed more than 29,000 surgeries, treated more than 61,000 inpatients, and provided outpatient care to more than 1.2 million people.

Also in the the world's largest refugee camp in Bangladesh For many years, Doctors Without Borders has been providing life-saving care. The plight of the approximately one million Rohingya living in the camp under catastrophic conditions is barely covered in the international media anymore. This makes it all the more important that the organization’s teams are there to help. They operate hospitals and smaller health facilities, send mobile teams throughout the camp, and carry out large-scale vaccination campaigns. In 2024 alone, they reached nearly 850,000 people through health promotion activities and provided more than half a million outpatient consultations.

We have been supporting Doctors Without Borders since 2008 and are proud that the organization has been a permanent part of our donation portfolio ever since. In 2024, Doctors Without Borders Germany allocated 83.5% of its donations to its statutory mission in the field. 16.5% was spent on administrative expenses and fundraising (Source: https://www.aerzte-ohne-grenzen.de/unsere-organisation/finanzen).
